The town developed into a tourist centre as early as the middle of the 18th-century when a top Limerick surgeon discovered the beneficial effects of its mineral waters.

The building, which in started off as a pub, then was expanded into a bakery, now also harbours a micro-brewery under its roof. At the same time it is an eatery and a renowned music venue for traditional and contemporary music. Peter realised very quickly how complicated and time-consuming it was to brew his own beer – it really is a labour of love. He enrolled the help of a Master Brewer, and the result can now be tasted in the Roadside Tavern. All the hard work and the quality of his beers were officially recognised by the Lonely Planet , when in May , very timely just before the first Craft Beer and Street Food Festival, the well-known and renowned travel guide published a Global Craft Beer Guide.
Publican Peter Curtin has maintained the pub, and in he founded a microbrewery on-site.

Lisdoonvarna is located in the area of County Clare known as the Burren , on the N67 road between Ballyvaughan and Ennistymon. The Aille river flows through the town, where it is joined by the Gowlaun and Kilmoon streams. The town is in the civil parish of Kilmoon.
The present town is a comparatively new one by Irish standards, dating mainly from the start of the 19th century. The spa official opened in , but the town was visited before by people partaking of the waters. Even by the s, however, the facilities were quite primitive. The wells were privately owned by the Guthrie family and were later developed and baths built by the new owner, a Dr. Westropp, who lived in a house overlooking the spa.

It has become a month long dance and music event also with dancing commencing at 12 o’clock every day in various venues and continuing around the town and outside until 3 am.
It was my first visit and I had a ball! People come from all over the world and every county in Ireland was represented. A matchmaker is in residence in this famous pub where else and for a small fee will match anyone up for a week or for life! Couples come back every year who have met in Lisdoonvarna and since married!
